Many thinkers now refer to humanity as homo
narrans, the storytelling animal. We love to tell
each other stories and do so in all forms of
communication--everyday conversation, news reports,

scientific essays, even textbooks. But a more common
way of studying narrative is by looking at those written
forms we more commomnly call literature.

Metaphor is not only considered to be a useful
"literary" device. Research into the nature of metaphor
shows us that it is also a "metaphor" for the natural
movement of the mind.
