Unit Five

    Lecture Notes
Many thinkers now refer to humanity as homo

narrans, the storytelling animal. We love to tell
each other stories and do so in all forms of
        communication--everyday conversation, news reports,
scientific essays, even textbooks. But a more common

way of studying narrative is by looking at those written
forms we more commomnly call literature.
    Readings
Metaphor is not only considered to be a useful

"literary" device. Research into the nature of metaphor
shows us that it is also a "metaphor" for the natural
        movement of the mind.
